Being a friend of God

February 9th, 2010

ever wonder what being a friend of God really means?  i mean, really!  how can a person have a relationship with the God of the Universe?  well the answer can be found in a simple and yet very deep statement made by Jesus:  “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26 HCSB)

friendship with God is possible because God himself, took matters into his own hands and made a way for us.  He sent Jesus, who always has been, who is and who will always be a part of the eternal trinity of God, to stand in the gap for us.  because we are sinners both by nature and by choice – left to ourselves, we could never make ourselves good enough to get to God.  this is something every religion except Christianity tries to do – work your way to heaven by doing good things and not doing bad things.

God knew that it was not possible for man so He stepped in with a plan.  with sin comes a stiff penalty – the Bible puts it this way – the wages of sin is death! (Romans 3:23)  unless God intervenes the result of sin in our life will result in death – eternal seperation from God.  because God is a holy God, he could not let sin go unpunished – if he had – he would cease to be God!  There had to be someone who could fulfill God’s requirement of perfection.  Jesus became that perfect man.  when he went to the cross – he paid the death penalty for all of us.  when we accept by faith God’s provision for our sin and receive his forgiveness, we are in an incredible way given the righteousness of Jesus.

Jesus took our sin on himself and offered in return his perfection!  talk about the deal of a lifetime!!  it’s kind of like me going to rolls royce dealer and taking in my bicycle to trade straight up for the best car on the lot!  who would not want this kind of deal!  yet the bible tells us that the cross of Jesus is foolishness to them that are perishing.  in other words – it doesn’t make sense!  with man it is impossible but with God all things are possible.

When God calls a man or woman by His Spirit He gives them the faith and understanding they need to place their trust in Him.  It really is all God’s doing!  AMAZING!  He loves us so much that He has done all the work.  there is nothing left for us to do except believe.  and when we believe we are made children of God – friends of God.  in the family with all the rights of a child of the King.

yes, it seems impossible – and it is if we try to somehow earn or work our way to God.  but through faith and belief we are set free and made right with God.  are you a friend of God?  have you come into the family through faith - believing Jesus died in your place to take away your sin, that he rose again on the third day victorious over death and now offers to give you His righteousness?  if not, the invitation is there for you – all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved!  call on him, ask for his forgiveness and surrender your life to him.  if you need help doing that – please email me or call!

may God bless you today as you continue in your journey of friendship with Him!

The way of the worshipper

January 22nd, 2010

i recently read the little book “way of the worsphiper” written by buddy owens.  i highly recommend it – btw – valerie is going to lead a women’s study on this book real soon, so if you are interested please let her know!

anyway, he begins the book with this verse:  Psalm 25:14 which happens to be one of my all time favorite verses – when i was at a very critical point in my life the Lord showed me this verse and he used it to begin a change in me that continues to this day.  i want to begin in verse 12.

12 “who is the person who fears the Lord?  he will show him the way he should choose.  13  he will live a good life, and his descendants will inherit the land.  14 the secret counsel of the Lord is for those who fear him.” (HCSB)

another translation of vs 14 says- “friendship with God is reserved for those who fear him – with them he shares the secrets of his promises!”

i love that!  i don’t know about you but i want to be a friend of God!  i want to pursue this thought of being a friend of God.  monday, i’m gonna write about what it takes to start up this friendship.  until then, please feel free to give your comments – i would love to hear from you!  may you experience the Lord today in a very real way!
